An audio crossover is a type of electronic filter that is used to split an incoming audio signal into multiple (usually two or three) outputs. Crossover filters can be active or passive, with passive crossovers being the most popular in audio setups. They’re usually an integrated component in musical instruments and other audio gear, including bass and keyboard amplifiers or enclosures, as well as sound reinforcement system equipment such as PA, monitors, subwoofer systems, and other types of speakers.

When replaying an audio recording, different sounds that have different frequency levels need to be optimized so all the sounds blend well and sound their best. Crossovers split the signal into separate frequency bands, then routing the proper signals to loudspeakers, tweeters, or horns so that each frequency is optimized.

Crossovers are an ideal addition to any sound setup that would benefit from immersive, detailed audio. This includes home entertainment, recording studios, home studios, or musicians or other audiophiles who strive to get the best listening experience out of their speakers. They can also be used for power amplification to boost a signal at the same time it’s being split.
